My daughter Grace is 7. Smart, funny, loud.
She's also what her teacher calls "highly spirited."
What that actually means: her brain doesn't slow down.
Not at dinner. Not during bath time. Not at 8pm when she's supposed to be winding down.
She would lie in bed, arms moving, legs kicking, talking talking talking.
"Mom, did you know that dolphins sleep with one eye open?"
"Mom, what if our house was made of clouds?"
"Mom, I'm not tired."
She was exhausted. Her body was exhausted.
But her nervous system had no idea.
And I had no idea either, until I started looking into why.
